Directed by comedian Bo Burnham and featuring a superb acting performance by Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade is the first great coming-of-age movie for Gen-Z, a generation that’s grown up surrounded by digital media.
The story follows the life of Kayla, an eighth-grader who struggles with social anxiety and finding her place in the world. As it progresses, it begs questions about the all-encompassing nature of social media, but it’s the film’s exploration of what it means to be brave that really makes it stand out. It’s one of my favorite films of 2018. Also, just as a side note, A24 is making some great films.
My Rating: 8.6/10
